Hip Hopyard is located in Wainfleet Township and is adjacent to Lake Erie. Our farm has been in active production since the early 1800's. Original owners, the Minor's, used the land as a dairy farm operation. They knew what they were doing when it came to good land husbandry - fields were rotated between feed crops such as hay and corn, and then as fallow for grazing. This provided us with an excellent base for starting our hopyard. We take pride in the long family history of the farm which lead us to purchase the property in 1994.
Our goals were simple - have a great place to raise our kids, enjoy a rural setting, and keep the farm in production.
At this stage of our lives, we wanted a new venture, one that would allow us to capitalize on the agricultural asset, be at a scale we could handle and could be used in some secondary production for a commodity we like - beer certainly fit that profile. Thus was the genesis of the idea for cultivating hops - that, and the huge surge in craft breweries, especially those that wish to differentiate themselves through locally-sourced product.
We now have four varieties - Cascade, Centennial, Chinook and Ultra. They are doing very well, and the story continues to be written....stay tuned.
